it is an easy work to learn, and presents no major technical difficulties for players. although in some respects, the piece does seem to lack the intellectual depth of maqrazas work as it moves too quickly from theme to theme. as in all his works, ravels pavane remains accessible, and offers much to the student and amateur alike.
that said, the octavaine can be one of the most spectacular and technically demanding sequences of the piece. the recorder part is first heard in the opening of the work, which is followed by a cello arpeggio in the key of b major. the cello part then cycles through the tonal regions of the grand octave. the piece ends with a striking cadenza sequence scored for the piano in a and then in d minor. pavane is a joy to play and listen to. i would be very surprised if anyone caught this cd and did not fall in love with it.
