following a successful stint at pixar, lee unkrich took charge of pixar's first original production, coco, the coco, a film about a 12-year-old boy named miguel who, with the help of a monkey, a deer and a magical helmet, must join a feisty band of tricksters, musicians and misfits, and together, journey back in time to help his great-great-grandfather fix a mysterious problem that threatens to tear his family apart. the film is directed by lee unkrich, who also co-wrote the screenplay. the film is a co-production between pixar and disney. disney acquired pixar in 2006. it was pixar's second film after wall-e (2008), and disney's first animated feature since the original toy story (1995) to star an all-latino cast. pixar and disney chose to make the film in stereoscopic 3d, and allowed unkrich to develop a story set in mexico, since its inhabitants were already familiar to unkrich from his work at pixar. unkrich stated that he was aware he could have "americanized" the mexican setting in his story, but that the setting would have been "not like we intended it".
although the script was written by unkrich, he composed the songs, supervised the sound design and developed the singing style. when disney screened an early draft of the script to unkrich in the summer of 2012, he approached composer michael giacchino, and ultimately convinced him to work on the film. michael giacchino had a lot of trouble coming up with a musical score for the film. a musical score was to be in the style of a mexican mariachi band called los panchos. however, unkrich soon realized that a mexican mariachi band could not be the soundtrack for the film. 3d9ccd7d82
