Two days before returning to Japan, there was a huge live event very close to the apartment where I was staying in Ulaanbaatar.
The first surprise came at around 8:00 p.m.
Suddenly, enormous “BOOM!” sounds echoed through the area again and again.
What made it even more shocking was the location. This was right in the middle of the city, surrounded by apartment buildings.
Coming from Japan, it was hard for me to imagine such large-scale ground fireworks being set off in a place like this. My first thought was genuinely, “Did a fireworks factory or something just explode?”
But that was only the beginning.
At around 11:00 p.m., even louder explosions began going off one after another.
They were so powerful that this time I actually wondered, “Has a war started?”
I quickly looked outside and saw colorful fireworks lighting up the night sky. I could also see a large number of drones flying overhead.
That was when I finally realized, “Oh, this is an event!”
I immediately searched online and discovered that it was a concert by THE HU, Mongolia’s internationally famous rock band.
What surprised me most, however, was the fact that such massive fireworks were being set off right in the middle of an area surrounded by apartment buildings.
In Japan, I imagine it would be extremely difficult to do something on this scale because of safety regulations, noise concerns, and consideration for nearby residents.
Of course, Japan has its own strengths, especially its strong emphasis on safety.
But living in Mongolia, there are moments when I’m amazed by the country’s boldness and energy—moments that make me think, “Wow, they really go this far!”
First, I thought there had been a massive explosion. Then I wondered if a war had started. And finally, I discovered it was a concert by a world-famous Mongolian band.
It became one of those unforgettable nights that I probably could never have experienced without actually living in Mongolia.
